NK English School offers free English classes to the children and young adults of Nong Khiaw and the surroundings areas.

Our main goal is to give the local community the opportunity to learn English for free. We currently hold English classes five afternoons per week with over 150 students registered.

The English courses take place from Monday to Friday and are divided into 6 groups, from 4:30 p.m to 7:30 p.m. Our students are aged from 9 to 26 years old.

Our English programs have been validated by the village's Ministry of Education. We have 4 local teachers who ensure Lao/English translation and vice versa, which ensures a better understanding for the students.

They also have access to a library and have the opportunity to watch movies in English. On Saturdays, there is no class, but in the afternoon it's open house and students can come and play board games in English, encouraging them to practice reading, writing, and oral expression at the same time.

In addition, we are fortunate to welcome weekly, or monthly volunteers from all around the world, giving the children the incredible opportunity to learn and practice English with a member of another culture.

Our main goal is to provide an easy and comfortable environment for the students while learning, where they will never feel ashamed of trying or being wrong, so that they will gain confidence in themselves and their abilities.

Practical Lessons - Our Methods

Learn and enjoy --> Our methods to teach English for children include:

  • DVDs

  • CDs

  • Books

  • Magazines

  • Online course subscriptions

  • Mobile apps

  • Songs

  • Quizzes

  • Educational games

Students are particularly nervous about making mistakes so boosting confidence in a friendly environment is very important.

Smiles and encouragement will help a child feel confident and boost participation.

We also do use traditional methods which are formal and require that the children sit, listen, repeat and write.

Additionally, pictures and flashcards are used to provide visual cues to prompt listening and speaking. Matching pictures to words provides a powerful learning tool and has been recognized as “Accelerated Learning.”
